We had never eaten at Dock o’the Bay but needed a fun, laid-back wedding reception for 45 guests. Bridget is the owner and driving force behind Dock of the Bay, and as soon as I met her I knew everything would be fine. The food reviews on tripadvisor speak for themselves, but it’s much harder to produce quality meals en-masse. That particular task was achieved with flair and panache, but there was far, far more. From my demanding requests for entertainment through to the provision of gluten free food, and from the fantastic level of service given by every single member of her team to the way Bridget gave a lift in her own car to one of our entertainers … every aspect of the 9 hours we were at the restaurant was fun, stress free (for us!) and executed with military precision. The attention to detail, food, and quality of service are commensurate with quality restaurants, but at a very competitive cost. Perfect!

We visit half a dozen times a year and always have a fantastic meal. I have never thought to write a review before but after visiting last night ( Dcember 10th) I realised just how good this place is and was left wondering why we don't come more often.
All 4 of us enjoyed our meals enourmously - I have never
had a bad meal here, evenings or Sunday lunch but on this occassion the place was packed to the rafters with large parties on their Christmas "do's" We were just 4 friends getting together for a quiet meal. In spite of the fact that they were incredibly busy the food and service was "spot on " no delays, still attentive and friendly and professional service. request for a variation to my dish was happily complied with even though the chef must have been rushed off his feet! I was really impressed. We did not feel "overwhelmed" by the party atmosphere either, we were seated just perfectly!
This place is run by
a very hands on couple. The staff are good at what they do and the fact that several of the staff have been here for some years speaks volumes. It's not part of a chain but a unique and individual place and I for one think that is what really makes it.
By the way they have an area outside to the front, great in fine weather or for smokers!

“Lovely place to watch the tide roll away (metaphorically)”

This is one of my favourite places to eat out in Southampton. No pre-cooked, tasteless food here - it's all prepared to order and you can really taste the difference.

The atmosphere is very good, so you feel as if you're having a 'night out' instead of just a bite to eat. The staff are very professional and friendly.

“Beautiful food, great staff!”

“By far my favourite restaurant in Southampton”
5 of 5 starsReviewed 23 October 2011

I have loved this place for years and am so glad that the positive reviews on here say it all. The food is tasty, fresh and interesting with some of the best steaks around. Mussels are always superb too.
The service is friendly and casual but efficient and you are always treated like an old friend when you walk in. There is always a lovely, lively atmosphere without it being noisy or impersonal.
No one knows more about wine and spirits than Matt the barman, who is always willing to create you something new to try!
Bridget and Mo stand for local, family run businesses andI would rather support them and pay a bit more for my food than go to some cheap chain with no personailty.
I have even converted my parents who don't normally like going anywhere near town!

This restuaraunt is nice and simple with good local food and really good wine. the cosy atmosphere is perfect for a laid back meal with friends. Whenever we go here we try to buy the mussles (as they are delicious) and definitely the best in town.

If your thinking of visiting sign up the newsletter on their website and they send a discount code- perfect for the wallet!

We took our son and a load of his pals here for a celebration dinner - it was great fun and just the right atmosphere. Everyone enjoyed there food - the lamb shanks and various fish dishes were much appreciated, and the puds were particularly tasty.

We had our wedding reception meal here in early September.

We chose Dock as we'd had a few meals here and having done the legwork around Southampton for a suitable venue Dock came out on top.

Right from the outset we had personal attention from Bridget and her team (Richard was excellent). We chose our menu's so that our guests could choose in advance what they wanted to eat from a wide selection. So much better than other venues we tried with set meals! We had personal one - 2 - one attention and could contact Bridget by email or mobile at any time to discuss our wedding or ask questions etc.

The day was fantastic. The tables were set out beautifully - very good attention to detail. I handed over name places and other items the night before and it was all set up perfectly when we arrived.

Everyone commented on how lovely the food was. The day was truly superb.

Would definitely recommend the Dock for a wedding venue.

Really lovely meal and very friendly staff. Would not have eaten there had I judged the book by it's cover as it's a bit our of town and doesn't look special. However once inside you are well looked after and the flavours and quality of the food are truly excellent. Book with confidence and enjoy

This was my first trip to the restaurant and I loved it. The atmosphere is welcoming and the staff friendly - they neither hover around too much nor disappear into the abyss. They created some nice banter without being in your face.
The food was fantastic with some lovely locally sourced food and specials. There was a great range, largely European style cuisine.
Will be returning soon.

I have been going to Dock o the bay for approximately 6 years and have never had a disapointing meal. Food is always perfectly cooked and service very attentive. Staff clearly know the food and know how to make customers feel welcome. The atmosphere is relaxed, works well as a venue for a catch up with friends as well as a romantic meal with hubby. The menu has something for everyone and although is not a cheap meal out I think it is reasonably priced considering the quality of food.

Have visited dock o the bay 3 times this year. Very good choice on the menu and a decent specials board.

I have had the steak each time. It is always cooked to perfection, comes with a pepper sauce and they always give me an extra sauce free! Most places don't do this so I am very pleased with dock o the bay.

The portion sizes are very generous and after having mussels and a steak I always leave full. Again most restaurants give you a pitiful amount of mussels but dock o the bay do it right. One criticism of the mussels is the bread that comes with them, anaemic and processed looking stuff of the sort you'd get on an airline.

Dock o the bay is very very reasonable. They offer 20% off for returning customers and those signed up to the newsletter, which means 2 bottles of wine 2 mains come in at about £45.

Courteous staff who are very attentive. All in all a very good place to eat in Southampton and would definitely recommend this place over The Cowheards down the road.

I had the burger which was very good and the portion was a good size.

A great place for lunch.

5 of 5 starsReviewed 22 August 2011

4 girls in their 20's came here for a birthday treat for Emma.
I rang beforehand to see if I could get in a bit early to put up a banner and leave some cake and the lady I spoke to was really helpful and friendly.

When I arrived she was just as lovely, and showed me to our table, she couldn't have been more helpful.

Later when we came back with the birthday girl the staff were welcoming and sat as at our table, gave us the specials, came back to take our order and then let us get on with having a nice evening.

The food came, and it really was delicious - Sam said it was the best spaghetti carbonara she's ever had, and the portions were huuuge and beautifully presented.

After our mains, (and after a bit of winking and nudging) the waitress brought out the birthday cupcakes I'd dropped off, some restaurants get funny about doing this but they were happy to.

I definitely recommend Dock O The Bay, I've been driving past for years and always wanted to pop in, and I'm so glad we did - its our new favourite!

My partner, our 7yr old and I visited this restaurant during a pre-cruise stay in Southampton and chose here due to tripadvisor reviews and am so glad we did. The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive from arrival and throughout the meal. My partner would highly recommend the mussels and lamb shank. They have a good childrens menu and will also do half size portions of the majority of main meals off the adult menu.

We got a 20% discount voucher off their website which was very handy, The bill for 3 courses each and wine was very reasonable for the quality and we can't wait to go back on our next visit to Southampton.

4 of 5 starsReviewed 20 August 2011

After being disappointed so many times by the restaurants in Southampton, I rarely go out. Most of the restaurants just don't give a damn and food are overpriced and awful. So, after reading so many positive reviews about Dock o' the bay, I have decided to give it a go. Still, I didn't expect too much and now I am so glad I brought my family there.

Each one of us had starters, main course and dessert. The mussels were so delicious, fresh and good portion as a starter. The Thai green chicken risotto was slightly spicy but very nice and creamy. The haddock fish cakes were tasty and went well with the salads provided. The meal was ended beautifully with an absolutely tasty mango panna cotta. My family was happy and so did I. Staff was attentive and polite. Spacious and friendly environment, the location isn't the most convenient one but I like the quiet surrounding on Saturday noon. The place was well looked after that even the loo was clean. I am happy to eat there where the chef and staff take pride in their food and services which unfortunately is rare in this town. Food was reasonably priced that you feel it's worth the money spent. I hope they keep the standard and stay in business or I'll have to cook for myself all the time.

Would definitely come back.

After seeing the good reviews my wife and I decided to book a table on a Saturday evening.
Warmly greeted by staff and shown to our table. From here on an excellent display of top level service and the right amount of attentiveness. We had breads, olives and the mussels with sauce for starters which was devine followed by 2 mains of chicken rissotto and a lamb dish. Both perfectly cooked and of decent portions. Not too pricey, good atmosphere and top food and service made this a very good choice for our anniversary :-)

Would recommend the lamb shank....the meat just fell off the bone, really yummy. Also had the side order of vegetables which really complemented the meal, though had to pay extra for veg which does bump the price up somewhat though we had the 20% discount offer which made a difference.

Had the Belgian waffle and toffee sauce with ice cream for pudding. Absolutely lovely.

Would eat here again for sure.

Nice atmosphere, and very booked up so clearly a good eating place.

Four of us visted Dock o the Bay last Saturday and had a great evening. From beginning to end it was a good experience - starting with glugging a gorgeous bottle of Shiraz and nibbling olives at the bar through to finishing with yummy desserts - lots to choose from and none in our party disappointed with their choices.
For starters we had - haddock fishcakes, shredded duck, goats cheese tartlet and ballotine of pork and apple - all beautifully presented and very tasty. Mains were good also - two of us particularly lke the green thai rissotto. All the staff from the barman, to the waitressses / waiters were friendly and welcoming. The service was very good throughout and prices reasonable too. Would thorouglhy recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Southampton.

“A lovely evening out with friends”

 Reviewed 11 March 2011

Having visited previously for a very good value Sunday lunch, we went again with two friends on a quiet evening last week.

I had mussels (traditional marinieres style) to start and received a generous portion, mussels cooked well, (plump and juicy) and seasoned just right! (I've had them elswhere when they have been overcooked and far too salty.)

Followed by a very nicely presented pork belly with melting tender meat and a perfect crackling.

The other 3 diners all enjoyed their dishes which included fish cakes, lamb shank, fish fillet, and two different yummy choc deserts.

We were served by Bridget who turned out to be the owner, and she was very welcoming and helpful.

The bill for 4 including drinks was about £70 as I recall, very good value.

The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. The only thing I would change about Dock O the Bay is the great big shark mural!

Definitely will be returning.

Visited on 22nd Feb. Nice to find the very convenient car park to the rear, so we'll forgive the mega pot holes in the drive. (Apparently awaiting the landlords attention).

Nice friendly staff creating a pleasant atmosphere. The consistently high Trip Advisor ratings are well deserved. We had three courses, all of which were well prepared using good ingredients and beautifully presented.

It was nice to find that the menu included dishes that didn't feature garlic. Not everybody likes it and some of us are allergic to it.

This was the first time we'd visited, it won't be the last!

We visited Dock o the Bay in Feb to celebrate my son's 21st who is at Uni in southampton. These guys have really nailed the concept of customer service. Arriving at 7.30 they hade made a great effort decorating the table and putting balloons up. We were given a great welcome, and started off the evening with a bottle of very reasonably priced champagne.
The menu is simple ( too many restaurants of this type try to create works of art rather than excellent meals) and the food is beautifully cooked and presented.
For a party of 8, we spent about thirty quid a head, which was a bargain considering we had three courses, beers and wine and champagne.
A special word for the all the staff, who are warm, welcoming and cheerful all evening. A great evening.

Hi,

I would just like to say Thankyou for such a lovely service Sunday week (9th), when I brought my Mum in for Lunch.

I had phoned ahead to book, and when we arrived a good table had been selected for us. The young man serving us offered me discreetly the option of a smaller portion for my mum to eat....which was perfect as her appetite isint huge, it was very thoughtful. The meal of Turkey roasts was delicious and the juice drink my mum had even had a straw and a slice of fruit, which made it easier for her to drink from, and pleasant to look at.
These small touches make all the difference. We really enjoyed the ambience, food and service, and.... the added benefit of using your 25% off voucher!
Our afternoon was complete with a leisurely stroll around the Common.

Thanks again

And Magazine reveiw

It is hard to believe it is almost 10 years since Bridget and Mo created dock o the bay restaurant.

A recent programme of upgrading the premises has been undertaken, all the while maintaining a consistently high level of both food and service.

There is nothing like an owner managed restaurant and Bridget and Mo are very hands on, ably assisted by manager Matt.

Whilst Mo takes care of sourcing and buying fresh produce daily, as well as stints as chef and overseing the renovation work. Bridget is very much front of house, and once she knows your name, you will always get a friendly and warm greeting on subsequent visits

Attractive decking has been installed to the front, which makes a great place to sit,sip a drink or eat some wonderfull food on a summers day.
Inside the kitchen has been relocated and modernised, the bar has been refurbished, there are new toilets and a new larger restaurant area.

All of this is fine but what about the food? Well for our most recent visit, we went on Mothers Day.
There is something about Dock sunday roasts. Yes, there's plenty of it, with more than sufficient vegetables and roasties. I think it is the relaxed cafe/bar feel about the place, that just makes it right for a leisurely sunday.

The roasts reperesent pretty good value at £8.95 with homemade desserts at £4.95. Good old Pinot Grigio was my mother in law's choice, Crisp and chilled for £15.95 a bottle.

Both lunch and evening menu's are availible every day.The last time i was there i had the roast shredded duck salad with hoi sin, followed by a wonderfull rib-eye steak.

There are daily specials and an early evening discount menu availible every night untill 6.30pm.

If you are looking to book a larger party for a special occasion, then the downstairs restaurant is ideal, as you can get a little noisey with out irritating other diners.

If you havn't been for a while why not check it out.

Review by The Daily Echo

Surely everyone wants to have that classic Cheers moment whenever they set foot in a bar?

To walk in and - just like Norm - be instantly greeted like an old friend no matter where you are.

Well, while you may not hear your name chorused by its staff and customers, Southampton's Dock o' the Bay boasts a welcome that is not far off that magic moment.

Everyone, from the bartender to the manager herself, treats you like they are genuinely pleased that you came inside.

But the true test when you are dining out has to be in the tasting, and the food here is every bit as pleasing as the welcome promises.

The tomato and red pepper soup and the main course of Mediterranean vegetables in filo pastry with a tangy curry sauce ordered by my vegan partner were both filling and full of rich flavours.

My deep-fried Brie wedges were perfectly cooked and a true melt-in-the-mouth experience.

The main event of chicken breast stuffed with goats cheese and wrapped in Parma ham was a classic and filling dish well complimented by it's parsley sauce.

With a huge bowl of chips as a greedy extra and four drinks, the bill came to a real value-for-money £33.70.

The whole evening was a winner from first to last but one of the great things about Dock o' the Bay is that it is not just a top grade restuarant, which, by the way, also boasts one of the best Sunday roasts in town. It also offers one of the most laid-back bars around where you can enjoy a chilled-out summer's evening or even a relaxed weekend afternoon just watching the hours go by.

Take it from me there really is nothing better than sitting in Dock o' the Bay wasting time.
